The principle of a cooling tower is to use the evaporation heat of water to absorb the heat in hot water, thereby achieving the goal of reducing the water temperature. It is basically composed of a water tank, a cooling pool, a filling layer, an air duct, and a fan. When hot water enters the packing layer of the cooling tower, it is blown to the top of the tower by a fan and comes into contact with air through the packing. During contact, a portion of hot water evaporates into steam and carries away a large amount of heat. The remaining water flows back from the bottom of the tower to the equipment, forming a cycle.
According to the different structures and working principles of cooling towers, they can be divided into many different types. For example, based on the structure of the filler layer, common types include dry cooling towers and wet cooling towers. The dry cooling tower has no packing layer, and its principle is to directly cool the water spray through air. The wet cooling tower is cooled by the contact between the packing layer and water. In addition, there are other types such as compact cooling towers and cooling tower groups.
The working process of the cooling tower can be described as the following steps. Firstly, hot water flows into the water tank of the cooling tower from the equipment, and then enters the cooling pool at the bottom of the tower through a water pipe. Next, hot water flows upwards from the bottom of the tower in the cooling pool and exchanges heat with the naturally cooled air above. As the hot water rises, a portion of the water will form small water droplets under the action of the filling layer and come into full contact with the air, thus taking away a large amount of heat. The remaining cold water flows back into the water tank, forming a closed-loop supply.
Cooling towers are widely used in industrial production. Firstly, it is used in power plants to cool the hot water generated in the generator set. During the power generation process, the temperature of the generator set is very high, and it is necessary to reduce the temperature through a cooling tower to ensure the normal operation of the generator set. Secondly, cooling towers also play an important role in the petrochemical industry. Many petrochemical processes generate a large amount of hot water, which requires cooling towers to lower the temperature to ensure the normal operation of production equipment.
